Reading this makes me painfully nostalgic and sadly aware of the side of the door I am no longer on – Diyala used to be my area of responsibility back in the day. How do I miss thee.
But in other news, Diyala is important in Iraq because it is one of the most heterogeneous provinces in Iraq and it forms a long border with Iran. Baghdad’s relationship with this province has been rocky to say the least, and this series of bombings before provincial elections is not surprising. The article guesses that AQI was responsible, but since they were bombing Sunni politicians it may also have been Shia militants who want to maintain their control over this province. Not enough information for me to tell at this point.
